The Artist

Jackie

Born in Minneapolis, Jackie Murphy’s creative spirit was shaped by the rugged landscapes of Moab, Utah, and the remote beauty of Missoula, Montana—where she lived 30 miles out on a dirt road. Seeking a reprieve from harsh mountain winters, Jackie moved to Hawaii in her mid-20s. It was there she met her husband, Doug, before the couple settled in El Cajon, California, in 1992. After a 20-year career in software development and consulting, Jackie retired to devote herself fully to her art.
Jackie began her journey with stained glass in 1989 and discovered ceramics in 2011. However, it was a 2012 fused glass class that truly ignited her passion. To gain complete creative control over her work, she and Doug built a private studio on their property, now equipped with several kilns. Her art is a vibrant map of her life: from the mountains and bull-riding culture of Montana to the lush tropical flora and sea life of Hawaii. When she isn’t in her own studio, Jackie works several days a month in Spanish Village Art Center, Studio 34A, which she shares with 4 other artists.
